French MPs call on Emmanuel Macron to aid and arm the National Resistance Front

Support le Front national de résistance (FNR) led by Ahmad Massoud in Afghanistan? Some in France desire it. On Wednesday August 25, around twenty Parliamentary deputies launched a joint appeal to Emmanuel Macron to send arms to the son of the late Commander Massoud, assassinated in 2001 by the Taliban.

The young man, aged 32, is currently in Panjshir, the only part of the country not to have been conquered by the Taliban, accompanied by his allies, including the vice-president of the former Kabul government, Amrullah Saleh.

At the head of these signatories: Éric Ciotti, deputy (Les Républicains, LR) of the Alpes-Maritimes, who on Thursday, August 26 declared himself a candidate for the presidential election of 2022, had already tweeted several times on the subject. "Faced with the Taliban, France must send logistical support, arms and ammunition to the soldiers of @AhmadMassoud01 before it is too late!"

He was notably joined by Guillaume Peltier, Robin Reda (Libres! The movement of Valérie Pécresse), Brigitte Kuster, Constance le Grip, Philippe Benassaya, also members of the Republicans. In their text, the deputies write that they cannot leave the democratic forces of Afghanistan "powerless to a victory for Islamic terrorism in the world" while "democracy, freedom, dignity, security and the lives of thousands of women, LGBTQ+ people, artists, sportspeople and minorities are directly threatened." They further write that it would be "to the honor of France" to lend a hand to the resistance that has formed in the Panjshir Valley. They conclude: "Our nation has a duty to prevent the Taliban from strengthening itself."
